The Adult Leadership Qualification (continued)
You will be required to hold a First Aid qualification as Guider, and the especially tailored First Response course is run at regular intervals in the county. This includes elements of safety for the girls as well as basic, common sense risk assessment. If you already hold a recognised First Aid Qualification, such as from St John’s Ambulance or The Red Cross, your mentor will advise you on what further information you need to know for guiding.
This all combines to give confidence to be part of a team running a unit. There is always someone on hand to answer a query — even if you think it is too small to worry about.
Your mentor may have had the same puzzle, and will be only too happy to maintain the support link long after you gain your warrant… you may well have gained a good friend too.
There are many other qualifications within Girlguiding that are achieved in the same ‘competence based’ manner: Camp, Holiday, Boating are all good examples.
The safety and welfare of the girls in our care is of prime importance, so we ensure that we have the knowledge base and experience to lead them, and let them learn and enjoy themselves.
Girlguiding adult leaders are volunteers, so are not paid, but any equipment, food or other supplies bought for a unit can be reimbursed, as can administration costs and guiding-related travel, receipts will be required. Many Districts or units may also pay a contribution towards Leader’s uniform.
