About You
Along with this booklet, you will have received a ‘Welcome to unit guiding’ leaflet.
That gives an outline of the national organisation, and definitions of what Guiding is; and in this booklet we have tried to enlarge on that and show you how the local teams work.
As a Unit Helper volunteer you might wish to
- Help in a unit with a specific activity (eg craft/music)
- Help in a unit regularly
You are very welcome to join in all the activities and trainings offered by the County or locally, but you would not follow the Adult Leadership Qualification (ALQ).
Many adult volunteers decide to undertake the Adult Leadership Qualification, when you shall become a Guider and wear Girlguiding UK clothes . This scheme works with your strengths and experience, and should take a couple of terms to complete, depending on activities within your unit. You will have a ‘mentor’ to support you through this stage, and as a friendly contact to be your ‘helpline’.
You will find that many skills developed in Guiding will be transferable to the work environment. Helping to run a unit demonstrates to (potential) employers that you have skills in communication, team building and working as a team member, planning, management and initiative, and that you are responsible and enthusiastic.
It also indicates that you have a sense of humour!
Whether you choose to be a Unit Helper or a Guider you will be asked to undertake a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. This involves filling in a Girlguiding UK form, presenting at least 2 forms of
identification such as passport, birth certificate or utility bill for a commissioner to confirm your identity, and completing an official CRB form known in Guiding as the Jemima Puddleduck form as the example given for this form is in that name. Once a clear declaration is received you will be able to work with girls unsupervised.
