Who's Who in the County

You will hear a lot of names and titles, as like many large organisations, Girlguiding uses shortcuts to describe our various roles in all levels of the team. We can be compared to the geography of local government… Parish then District then County Councils, if that helps. We call the volunteer managers who look after these areas ‘Commissioners’. They will have undergone training to take on these roles.

Your Unit The group of girls you are working with; each unit has a unique name reflecting its location
eg 1st Bristol or 42nd Bitton

Your District This is the next layer up. A group that your unit belongs to. There can be around 5—12 units (including Rainbows, Brownies, Guides etc)

Your District Commissioner is: ...............................

Your Division This is the next larger geographical area and would include probably 3-6 Districts, depending on the size of the area.

Your Division Commissioner is: ...............................

We have 10 Divisions in our County: Bristol North-East, Bristol North-West, Bristol South, Bristol South-West, Bristol West, Kingswood North, Kingswood South, Severnvale, South Cotswold, and Frome Valley.

These 10 geographical areas make up the County of Bristol & South Gloucestershire.

Why Bristol & South Gloucestershire you ask? Bristol & South Gloucestershire is the area formerly known as North Avon.
