Some people still think these statements are true:

“Guiding today is all about knitting, knotting and learning to bake cakes. Units follow a strict UK badge program devised by adults somewhere in London .”

“To be a Guide you have to be able to sing, be able to afford to wear an expensive uniform and like to spend a lot of time sat in church halls doing craft work.”

“Being an adult volunteer with Girl Guiding UK requires giving up almost every evening during the week and most weekends. Volunteer posts are formally constructed requiring little interaction with others. To be a useful and valued volunteer within Bristol and South Gloucestershire you have to be really dedicated and prepared to put the rest of your life second to Guiding.”

Rubbish? Yes – totally! But some people still think the above statements are true!

Why do they think this? Probably because no one has ever told them differently or shown them what guiding is really about today in Bristol and South Gloucestershire and in fact all over the world.

Does it frustrate you to think that there are potential members and potential volunteers who would never consider getting involved with Girl Guiding UK because they still believe the statements above?

Would they think differently if they knew the following…?

“Girlguiding UK offers an exciting and challenging program devised by the girls themselves. Activities can be as far reaching as hiking up Everest; to learning how to change a tyre on a car, from leadership training to yoga, the only limit really is the girls’ imagination!”

“Girlguiding UK is open to all girls aged 5-25, regardless of faith, school, social class or culture, the only requirement is a thirst for adventure, friendship and fun in our unique girl-only space.”

“Volunteering to help with Girlguiding UK couldn’t be easier! It doesn’t matter if you can only help once a week, once a month or once a year, with busy lives ourselves we can understand the need to be flexible. But whatever way you volunteer to help us you can guarantee it will be fun…or I wouldn’t be there!”
