Safe From Harm

Reduce Risks – check your venue for:

  • Clear access
  • Adequate space for activities
  • Security
  • Fire/emergency procedures
  • Sufficient heating
  • Possible damage to facilities
  • Adequate/appropriate equipment or facilities
  • Hazards (objects, uneven surfaces, etc.)
  • Other venue users

Don’t forget to check outside factors too, such as:

  • Traffic/parking
  • Weather
  • Animals
  • Water boundaries

Rules and Guidelines

  • Check The Guiding Manual for ruling on activities
  • Ask Division or County Advisers for advice on activities such as hill walking, water activities, climbing and abseiling
  • Inform your District Commissioner where you are taking your girls out from the meeting place
  • Check and adhere to ratios of adults to girls as stated in The Guiding Manual

During large events:

  • Check the maximum number your unit meeting place (or venue you are using) is permitted to hold
  • Check the adult to girl ratio is adhered to
  • Check the suitability of any equipment
  • Check emergency evacuation procedures

In the event of an accident resulting in injury:

Report the details to the appropriate Commissioner and to Girlguiding UK insurance service. A Notification of Accident form must be completed for any incident where girls or adults were at risk and any accident which resulted in a member seeking medical help (doctor or hospital).
