Young Leaders

Be part of a community of young women choosing their own path. It’s all about fun, skills, and unforgettable experiences
A Young Leader is a 14 to 17-year-old member of Girlguiding who helps out at a Rainbow, Brownie or Guide unit, often on a weekly basis. You are involved in planning activities, running games, etc. and are valuable members of the Leadership Team. You can also be a member of a Ranger unit but this is not a requirement of being a Young Leader.
Any Young Leader can work towards the Young Leader Qualification (YLQ), which is designed to help you take an active, positive part in running a Rainbow, Brownie or Guide unit.
Becoming a Unit Leader
Once you turn 16 you can start working on your Leadership Qualification (LQ). This is completed by adults to become Leaders or Assistant Leaders in their unit. Lots of the work carried out as part of a YLQ counts towards an LQ. Although you can’t take on these roles until you turn 18, you can work on the qualification at the age of 16/17 meaning you could be a qualified Leader on your 18th birthday! You can still work on the LQ if you haven’t completed the YLQ.
Find out more about the Leadership Qualification on the Girlguiding website.
